He had expected to see three or four police cars in front of Rachel’s home, blue and red lights carving up the night, but there were none. Her residence abutted a wooded hill on one side, leaving her only a single neighbor forty yards away, but he thought it likely the sound would have carried to at least a few other houses in the distance.
