dead. I am dead. these books are ridiculous. why can't these people just take a break???! Amaranthe has grown to be one of my favorite characters ever, but her plan to infiltrate the Behemoth in a flimsy disguise was utter insanity. I wanted to scream at her and give her a good whack on the head more than once while reading. This doesn't stop me from giving this book another 5 stars (I think I've given the majority of books from this series 5 stars). The characters have all grown on
... me so much and I cannot get enough of Sicarius and Amaranthe's (mis)adventures. The ending pretty much annihilated me. I must read the last book immediately, despite the fact that it is almost 3 in the morning.

Holy crap, that ending! Thank god I can immediately start reading the next one. There were so many things to love about this book. For one, this installment is told from Sicarius's point of view. Even though the author made it a point to use one of the main characters as a focal point throughout each of her books, for some reason, it never occurred to me that Sicarius would be one of them. Obviously he's one of the main characters but I'm just so used to his reticent personality that I never thought that we could ever see things from his perspective. And it made perfect that sense that the author waited to do that towards the end of the series because at this point, Sicarius has gone through a lot of personal growth in terms of accessing emotions and being able to act upon it, and so he is much more interesting now than I think he could have ever been.It was really neat to see Sespian and Sicarius slowly start developing some sort of foundation to a future relationship. It was also pretty cool to see Basilard and Sicarius interact with each other and acknowledge their feelings of loyalty toward each other. And of course, last but not least, seeing Sicarius and Amaranthe together was just shy of amazing. EXCEPT for the bloody fact that this whole civil war nonsense is really cutting into my Amaranthe and Sicarius fun times.Which makes the ending even more traumatic. Poor Sicarius.
