This story, based on Jane Austen's Persuasion, is a beautiful story about duty, love, and sacrifice. Elliot and Kai's love is strained by duty, but she never loses hope. You can feel the pain and heartbreak she feels by losing Kai, and then having him return only to treat her like she is transparent.
I understand how love can turn to hate. How can someone hate that strongly without love behind it? Hate is love unrequited. Hate is that feeling inside that is broken and painful and dark. But with
understanding and forgiveness, sometimes hate can return back to love. And that is what Across a Star Swept Sea is about: what we become when we find, and lose love.
I already checked out the next book by Peterfreund, and I hope I love it as much as this one. Five stars on a book I decided to take a chance on.
Sometimes the best novels are those you stumble across and fear you may not like.
