I’ve read wordless picture books before, but never one with such sparse illustrations. Much of Idle’s book is taken up by white space. But rather than making the book feels empty, this economy of color focuses our attention on Flora and the Flamingo. With just a few drawings, Idle tells a sweet story of friendship that made me smile and go “aww” as I read. Several pages also used fold-down flaps to show a quicker change than a page turn would. I’ve never seen this done in a paper pic
...ture book, as opposed to a board book, and while kids will love flipping the flaps to see the flamingo move, I worry that even the card stock pages won’t stand up to many independent readings from eager flippers. Despite that construction concern, I really liked the book. It was sweet and cute and unexpected.

A little girl and a flamingo show off their dance moves in this wordless books. There are many flaps in this book that make an interactive read and add even more fun to the book. The illustrations were done in colored pencils. This book shows just how much can be portrayed without words. I loved how the illustrations were just shades of pink and that the illustrations were simple. Students would also be able to see the theme of unlikely friendships through Flora and the flamingo that she dances with.
