“One week after Julia left, Phoebe was still in Washington, still living in her rented room. During the day she wandered the muddy streets, searching the faces of all the soldiers she passed. She hadn’t stayed to see the sights as she’d told Julia but rather to try to find news of her old regiment, to learn where Ted was and what he was doing.
