DYLAN SAID, wrapping his mother in a hug. Sometimes he forgot how small she was. Or was she getting shorter? At sixty-two, his mother was as energetic as ever. She was the principal of the local school and a fierce tennis player. From the look of her white skirt and tennis shirt, that’s where she’d been this morning. Her skin was tanned and her short hair still mostly blond, though there was more gray showing every year.
“Dylan, I was so glad you called. I think the garage door has somethin
...g wrong with it. It’s sticking.”
“Okay, I’ll check it out.” Sometimes having skills as a handyman was not much of an asset. He didn’t mind being his mom’s jack-of-all-trades, but he got a little tired of fixing broken screen doors for aunts and uncles and being on speed dial for every cousin with a plumbing leak.
But the Crosses were a close clan and as Mary, his mom, always reminded him, the family had been there for the two of them when his father was killed.
