She showed her badge to the security guard at the front desk and headed for the common area where the ice cream social would by now be underway. The cheerful sweeping notes of a swing music record beckoned from down the hall.

    She glanced up when Sarah entered the room.
    “Look what the cat dragged in.” She drizzled chocolate sauce over the ice cream, sprayed canned whipped cream over it and tossed a cherry on top. “Here.” She handed the bowl to Sarah. “Bring that to your girl over there.”
    Sarah grinned. “Yes, ma’am.”
    At the far edge of the circle a tiny woman in her late eighties sat perched on the edge of a lawn chair, her fingers gripping the armrests.
