Of course everybody was talking about what happened at Ursula’s party Friday night and also about the go-go club Saturday night. We’d already finished reading two books and were now working on a poetry section. I was assigned to read and analyze “The Negro Speaks of Rivers” by Langston Hughes. I had to write an essay. I read the poem a few times. I wasn’t impressed. Then, when I read it a third time, I understood. He wasn’t talking about rivers. He was talking about freedom.
