“Aline’s stomach flipped slowly with desire as he gazed down at her, his eyes searching for something she could not give.
She fought down the urge to reach out and touch him, knowing that if she did her resolve to avoid him would melt.
‘Let me pass, Hugh,’ she said, her voice catching in her throat.
‘Not until I know you are unharmed. Have you been with Stephen all this time?’ Aline nodded. ‘Yes, I have—and, no, he did not harm me. Why do you persist in seeking me out, Hugh? Did I no...t make myself clear enough last night? I want you to stay away from me.’ ‘You told me one thing, my lady,’ Hugh said passionately, ‘but your body told me another. Don’t try to hide what you felt.’ Hugh put a hand cautiously to her cheek, rubbing a callused thumb across her cheekbone.
