He leaned down and took the gun from his ankle holster and held it by his side, unlocking the back door and stepping in quietly and gingerly, doing a canvass of the whole house before allowing me to come in.
    I sat down heavily in a chair at the kitchen table and put my head in my hands. I had that hollowed-out feeling you get after a prolonged crying jag.
