By John Donne an English Jacobean poet, preacher and a major representative of the metaphysical poets of the 16th-17th centuries. “The Essayes in Divinity” were probably written in 1614, when Donne was preparing himself to enter Holy Orders in the Church of England and were composed in preparation for his ordination.
