“Put down your papers in the back.” At the command of the portly, bespectacled court clerk, a wide array of attorneys, the defendant, clerks, cops, reporters, media sketch artists, photographers, court buffs and gawkers jumped up from their seats as a burly, round-faced, black-robed judge swept into the courtroom. They remained at near attention as he climbed the dais and took his seat.
