“HOMEROOM On the morning of the next day, a school aide brought Saskia Stiles to my homeroom. Huddled behind her armful of notebooks and pens, Saskia stood at the door looking in. Her eyes darted up and down rows, looking for a free chair. In the back corner, she saw the furthermost desk, with no one sitting at the adjacent desk.
