“Even on this lost-in-space bluish melon of whirling atomic particles, even on this relative plane, even in an existence where undependability rules, there are certain feelings and states of mind that must be acknowledged as fact. It was a fact, for instance, that my wife no longer inhabited the body I had so loved. It was a fact that Rinpoche and I were driving through northern New Mexico in a blue Ford SUV that had been rented at the Fargo airport and that now, according to a dashboard warning... light, was due for an oil change.
