The etched emblems appear within elaborate borders of strapwork, architectural elements, figures, masks, swags, fruit, etc. They include Latin mottos. Dolce’s explanatory verses appear on the leaf following each emblem. These are printed letterpress, within one of two woodcut borders, and are numbered 1-52 at the upper right (mistakes, omissions).
