“There were no cries for help in the empty streets, and the wails of ambulances shrieking through crowded intersections had all but disappeared. So too did the terrifying echo of gunfire that had replaced the more soothing sounds of city life. The few operating streetlights created a comfortable glow that succeeded in masking the struggles that had befallen the once great metropolis.
