I listened to this on audio. It's classic LeDuff. He tells the story of Detroit extremely well because he lives Detroit. I wanted to "read" this because I feel like an outsider to a Detroit as a West Michigander. It's a mysterious place. It continues to have unbelievably high homicide rates and is still the incredibly shrinking city. It's hard to imagine Detroit peaked at 1.9 million residents only to now be below 700,000: The only city in the U.S. to every top one million
...and then recede. And boy has it receded! It's a painful story, this Detroit….

Warning – spoilers starting in the second paragraph. I agree with some of the other reviews - this book is not the history of Detroit, and it will not give you solutions on how the city can be fixed. So if you’re looking for that, it may not be the book for you. (But also if it was that easy to fix Detroit, wouldn’t we have done it already?)Instead, this book goes into the personal stories of the citizens of Detroit, and how their singular struggles highlight the issues the entire city faces. Charlie LeDuff does not give you the history of arson in Detroit. Instead, he covers how one arson killed a firefighter, and the aftermath of that tragedy. He does not provide solutions on how to solve Detroit’s government mismanagement. Instead he tells stories of firefighters without working fire alarms and cops taking the bus to crime scenes because there aren’t any working cars. He doesn’t give statistics on the city services that have been cut off. Instead he tells of streetlights going dark, of a mother driving her child with a gunshot wound to the hospital because ambulances often don’t show up in time (or at all) to emergencies. I enjoyed the “behind the scenes” look at the stories that make it into the newspaper, and found the writing engaging and interesting. This might be the first book that made me happy and mad at the same time, and left me wanting more.
