“It felt anticlimactic. I was so depressed that I walked past I don’t know how many bars and liquor stores without even thinking about going in. Eventually I reached a subway station. It was located just a little too far north to be on the fashionable Upper East Side that the old Yorkville neighborhood where Jimmy and I grew up had morphed into and a little too far south to be considered Spanish Harlem. I had a railroad flat. One room led right into the next.
