It was at once obvious from the houses built that income brackets and status symbols had not been forgotten by the planners. There were houses with fair-sized gardens and garages and young trees yearning to shield them from view, small houses in long well-disciplined rows with small gardens and garages and, in the majority, houses without garages and gardens intended only for vegetables. There had been self-conscious attempts to avoid monotony so that some roads of houses curved gently, others were straight, some had rustic fences, some brick walls, some houses had little porches over their front doors, some were without.
