““In here,” she called back from the corner of the long, deep stable and barn. She shot a glance at the stunned deputy standing beside her. He’d probably never seen anything like this.
Jake rushed through the stable, his gaze locking with Ella’s. “What is it?”
“Our next clue,” she said, her voice shaky. She swallowed and tried to regain control. Then she pointed to the wall. A message written in white paint stated: Bad decision.
Jake read the message, his eyes moving down to the limp body of a baby goat.
The deputy shook his head. “Found him after we’d fed and watered the goats and the cows.”
Ella gave him a grateful glance. “I realized the runt kid was missing but figured he’d show up if I kept calling. The horses were restless, so I came back in to check them and feed them. That’s when I found this poor little fellow.” She let out a dry sob.
