“Karen was lying motionless on her open sleeping bag, arms and legs spread wide. He pressed a hand below her rib cage. He felt the rise and fall of her breathing, and he started to cry. “Karen?” he whispered. She didn’t stir. In a boot near her head, he found a flashlight.
