She’d boiled it down to one of two possible causes: a feeling that she’d made a fool of herself by asking—hell, begging—Jacques to fight her battles for her or having fibbed to Alexandre about why she’d had to spend the night in Paris. Maybe it was both.
At nine she picked up the phone and dialed Maulévrier. Gauvin answered. His continued insistence on addressing her as “Madame La Comtesse”
