Campion did not look at either of the visitors but concentrated on the housekeeper. She showed no surprise at his sudden appearance, but when he asked her for the coffee she smiled and shook her head at him. Yeo pushed a slate across the table at him. “You have to write it,” he said briefly. Mr. Pirri looked up sharply. It had been evident from the Superintendent’s tone that he and Campion were acquainted. He got up at once, and with determined leisureliness, strolled towards the door. On the threshold he looked back. “Good night, all,” he said. “Good night,” said Yeo, without turning to him and sighed with relief when the area door closed behind him. “Thank the Lord for that,” he said. “London is full of those chaps wandering into houses like regular constables getting cups of tea. People like ’em, but they cramp a professional’s style.” He was speaking absently, and Campion, who had by now established communication with the housekeeper, stepped back as she bustled from cupboard to stove.

This started out to be a good book, but the activities and attitudes pf the Carados family, mother and son, are very unreal. Not at all logical or convincing to a reader even of credulous attitude.

AND, my understanding, from previous books was that Campion and Oates were as thick as identical twins, and in this book they've already known one another for 17 years. Yet, Oates is treating him very curtly andin an antagonistic way.

The Bishop's story about how he got 6 dozen of this rare wine...There was NO "Occupation" in WW1, such as occurred in WW2 , the period of this book. Trench warfare caused army advances and retreats to almost stagnate, and thos advances and retreats were measured rarely in miles and mainly in hundreds of yards. for much of the war.
