‘Bonjour friends of chocolat, as we say in France,’ said Madame Ombre, a tall, skinny and slightly cross-looking woman. Emma wondered how you could possibly look cross when you baked chocolate cakes all day. Madame Ombre’s black hair was tied back in a severe bun, largely hidden under a tall chef’s hat.
