“The night was so cold and the sound of her footsteps echoed across the frozen ground. He recognized her immediately, but he stayed in the shadows and watched her go into the house.
He waited—for her to come back out again—for whoever might be following her to catch up. He looked upward at the night sky. There was no moon visible, no stars.
