Captured Innocence
“Within seconds, the double, glass-paned doors swung open. She and Conley were ushered into a spacious foyer.
“I’ll let Mr. and Mrs. Woodward know you’re here.” The maid bobbed her head and disappeared through an archway to their left.
A padded bench sat against one wall and Jo marched to it, the heels of her boots clicking on the marble floor. She lowered herself to the cushions, popping back up immediately as her mother entered the room.
Her mother’s hair was silver and styled into a fashionable bob. Grey slacks and a grey long sleeve sweater covered her willowy frame. She fingered the reading glasses hanging around her neck on a pearl strand. She acknowledged Conley’s presence with a nod then focused her attention on Jo. “Jocelyn.” Her fingers clicked along the pearl strand as if she were counting a rosary.
“Mother.”
Sylvia Woodward compressed her lips, the only sign of her displeasure.
