Really wonderful book. My only very minor complaint is the way the story unspools. At the start, Agnes is sent for an execution but first placed with a family on hold. A reverend is assigned to her, and her account of what happened is able to be told first hand, with no resistance, to the reverend, and eventually the family falls in line too. I wish there was a more interesting, dramatic way her version of the incident came out. But regardless of this, I really enjoyed the book - e
...specially the sad, romantic and wistful first person chapters of Agnes herself speaking.
edu16 says:
A reconstruction of the events surrounding the last woman to be sentenced to death in Iceland back in the early nineteenth century, this book is evocatively written with the desperate poverty of the country at the time brilliantly described - a surprise given the image we have, still undimmed by the financial crisis, of a prosperous nation. It's a bit 'Wuthering Heights' at times and the use of idiom and vernacular are especially skilled. Not sure if it was long or short listed for the Booker Prize but it probably deserved to be.

Excellent book, the description brings you there, your heart goes out to Agnes! Couldn't put it down until the very end with tears in my eyes

Not usually given, to read books of either history or death, I was apprehensive about reading this book. Yet, I could not put it down. Hannah Kent's use of the written language, is a pleasure to read. It made me feel as though I'd been absorbed into the weave of old Icelantic folklore and history. Also it has been the first book I've read on line and for free. I was amazed at how simple that process has been. Well done and thank you.
Only one very small issue. I actually read this book over the Internet but didn't download it. Whether this is the cause of the issue I had, I don't know but although I read the book in pages rather than one continuous stream, I had no idea of how many pages made up the book so was never sure of when it would come to a close.
