We’re driving back from the police station. I am surprised we are all going home. I thought they would keep at least some of us behind. Peter, my father, me.

We’re driving back home. I cannot look at Peter. I... am turned to face the window. He is too. In the window I can see his reflection, and he mine. He watches me as I watch him. Whichever way I turn, I feel his eyes on me. I want to get out of the car. I imagine doing this. I remember now. I remember wanting to get out of the car and walk along the road. Somehow I would find my way back to Barrydale and to the mountain pass and the pool, climb down to the rock pool where Paul died, sit on the rock and look at the water.
