“There was a deep hesitation in his eyes, as though he was hiding something but wanted to tell her.

So, she set down the apple and without a napkin to clean the juice, she wiped her palm on her shirt. She wasn’t about to get the sheets all stick...y and gross.
“Kathleen,” she said, holding out her hand to him.
Instead of shaking it like all the men in her life had done, Ben leaned in and kissed her fingertips so gently she almost didn’t feel it.
“Kathleen, there’s not much I can tell you. Under orders, you see.”
