“The sky, too, looked clouded and muddy, as if the rain had stained it. Everything smelled of damp, clammy in the rising heat as the day drew on. I hadn’t expected to sleep after the excitement of the night, but I was out as soon as I lay down: I didn’t even remember falling asleep.
