But she kept glancing at the door, watching and waiting for Father Kelly or Tom to return. She started every time it opened, and struggled to conceal her disappointment when she saw that it wasn’t either of them. She heard Father Kelly talking to someone before he finally entered the hall. Seconds later she heard the thunder of footsteps and when she looked out of the window she saw a small boy running down the hill.
‘Father Kelly?’ A dozen women called out to him.

Before they opened the doors to the queue outside, Betty Morgan filled her jug for her and gave her a brown paper wrapped, plate.
‘Apple tart. Push it in the bottom of your basket, before anyone sees it,’ she whispered.
Amy shook her head. Her mother and father had insisted that for the duration of the strike, they had to share what little they had.
