““They found tracks in the woods leading to and from the big pine tree more than a mile out. The shooter had to climb high up to get a clear view,” Kevin said. He was stating the facts, his voice flat. He stood there along with the rest of the Pro KEDDS team and the other members of Valdez security feeling empty and defeated. They had failed. Many of the men in the room were already expecting the worst, silently saying their prayers and a final goodbye to their loved ones.
Gonzalo had his back to them. He stared out into the night waiting for it. It happened faster than he expected. The giant tree had been doused in gasoline. The flames hungrily raced up its trunk and quickly reached the crown. It burned tall and bright, a giant candle that could be seen from miles and miles away.
“Spruce,” Gonzalo said.
“Spruce?”
“Yes Kevin, a spruce. You called it a pine.”
“My mistake, sir.”
