“Neither he nor Margie talked on the way home. Remy thought over how he could get back into good graces with Margie. He would have skipped the whole party if he’d known Gloria had planned to come.
He dodged her whenever possible, for the same reason he’d broken off their engagement ten years earlier. He once thought it doable to have a life with Gloria. Remy downshifted the car and crept to the stoplight. He glanced over at Margie. Her head leaned back on the headrest.
“Tired?”
“A little.” She gazed out the front windshield.
“I’m sorry about tonight. I had no idea…” The light turned green, and he lifted his foot off the clutch.
“It’s okay.”
