At Laragh on Saturday night the men would get together in the store offic...e after tea and commence the serious business of the week, which was drinking rum. The store office had an old-fashioned, elevated accountant’s desk with the high stool that went with it; this was the only furniture apart from the children’s desks and forms, too small for the men. They sat around on packing cases or on the floor, debating alcoholically the work of the station and the state of the surrounding district.
