“She had heard his voice. Hugh de Guerrant’s voice. She was certain of it. She rolled onto her back and lay still, her breath trapped in her chest as she listened. Only the scampering footsteps of a mouse and the night wind purring outside her window marred the silence. She lay back against the pillow, her blankets rolled down to her waist. Had she imagined it?
