I'm intrigued by reviews that found the numerous characters too hard to follow or unrelated. I did not have that experience. My experience of this book was an experience of a theme well-timed to individuals at mid to late stages in their lives (not that twenty somethings won't find the book meaningful or relevant). I loved how the characters were so intertwined and that people came back to what was right/just and important. I want to read Beautiful Ruins again just to visualize t
...he Italian coast and spend time with Walters' Pasquale, Dee, Alvis, Pat, etc.

I was looking forward to this book because I love Italy and the premise of going back and forth from the early 1960's to now, weaving the lives of 6+ characters seemed like fun. It wasn't. I found the book laborious after the first 50 pages or so. I kept reading, hoping it would grab me, but it never did. I did not particularly like any of the characters (other than Pasquale). I got to page 220 or so (63% said my Kindle) before I decided I was done. I did read the last chapter just to see how it ended (a bit too tidy) and as I read the end, I realized that some characters had made no impression on my whatsoever (in particular, Pat). I had to go back to remember who he was and I had spent some 20 pages in the UK with him. Others have written that this book is witty, ironic and compelling. I thought it was predictable and dull.
