She was in the supermarket, her trolley piled high with the week’s shopping. At the place where you pay there was a woman stacking her shopping on the counter.
“Nice weather for the time of year,” the assistant said to her.
The woman, sorting out what she had bought, seemed overcome by this casual remark. She puffed and gasped and dropped a packet of breakfast cereal and half a pound of tea on to the floor.
