“Anne asked.
“Of course not,” Richard replied, gazing out the window as his coach rumbled along the cobblestone street. “It’s your home as well.”
“You and Miss Robertson walked for such a long time. What did you talk about?”
“She spent a good deal of time describing the two hundred gowns in her wardrobe.”
“She did not!”
Smiling, he turned his attention to Anne. “No, she didn’t. We actually spoke very little. I don’t think she’s at all comfortable with Farthingham’s wager.”
“He was rather bold to propose it.”
“It is easy to be bold when you have nothing to lose and all to gain.”
“Whatever will you ask him to forfeit?”
Richard looked back out the window. “Something he holds dear.”
“Something as dear as The Fair Lady is to you?”
“The yacht is an object, Anne, easily replaced. I prefer to ask of him something a bit harder to come by.”
“Which would be what exactly?”
“I haven’t yet determined the exact nature of my request.”
“You must have something in mind.”
