“Even jammier.’ Annis stirred the cauldron of soup I had left on the stove and tested the pasta for doneness, which, according to her, was a word. ‘Of course it’s a word, I just used it, and anyway, it’s done, so there.’ She heaved a steaming ladleful into a shallow bowl, broke a hunk of bread off a crusty loaf and smothered it in Somerset butter. Real Good Life stuff. I followed her example.
