An Echo of Death (2011)

Cover An Echo of Death
Genres: Fiction
To our east we caught occasional glimpses of the fog-enshrouded lake joining the dark and sodden clouds pouring their gloom toward civilization. Wisps of fog brushed against the Baha’i Temple as we followed the curve of the road into Wilmette. Most of the trees were bare by this time in October, but their number and thickness spoke of tree-lined streets. We passed Tudor, Georgian, and Queen Anne homes of immense size celebrating the wealth of the inhabitants. Luxury mansions and their now-denud...ed foliage rose in gothic splendor on both sides of the road. The mostly dormant but verdant well-manicured foliage meant that hordes of landscapers could look forward to years of work.
All the times I’d driven up this way, I didn’t ever remember seeing a person going into or coming out of one of these homes, much less someone lounging on the lawn or even simply staring out a window. It was as if the inhabitants were as misty and ethereal as the miasma of clouds that were now trying to engulf them.
