ant had never before met Mr. Stanley. He was much interested in his conversation. Among the toasts given was one in honor of the distinguished explorer, to which he replied at some length. After dinner all except the General, Judge Morgan, Mr. Young, Mr. Stanley and myself, went into the ball room where dancing had commenced. We remained at the table. The conversation turned upon the discoveries in Central Africa in which we were all intensely interested. Mr. Stanley told of his visit to Emperor Mtesa, whose capital was near the northwestern shore of Victoria Nyanza with whom he remained nearly two months and in whose dominions he had remained for nearly a year. He was Chief of Chiefs of a large number of tribes and could muster when occasion required an army of 250,000. Mr. Stanley had learned enough of the language of these people to be able to talk with them. He was therefore able to obtain much information relative to the people and the country, to learn the traditional history of a line of thirty- five kings, covering a period of a thousand years.
