“The front lawn was high and ragged. The garage door was open, showing an antique gas eater—some kind of Oldsmobile, on blocks and under wraps. Recycle bins were lined neatly on one side, next to an assortment of lawn animals. Small tools were scattered amid oil stains, and a pile of stained blue rags had spilled out onto the driveway.
