“Because—what, my very dear?” she murmured, her hands sliding up his shoulders.
He gave a gasp and wrenched away. “You know—why.”
She was beside him again at once. “Dearest, I—”
“Jennifer—do not.” Stern and unbending he gazed at the far horizon. “Don’t make me add to my shame.”
