It was better once their eyes had grown accustomed to the dark, but it was still seriously spooky, their footsteps unnaturally loud on the tarmac and the night rustlings in the grass frighteningly alien.
Mice and foxes and stuff, George told himself. That’s all. Nothing scary. He thrust his chilly hands deep into inadequate pockets, wriggled his backpack into a more comfortable position and plodded on.
