“Dr. Harris slowly opens his bedroom door and steps carefully on to the landing, bearing a solitary candle before him. It gives off a meagre light, but, even in the flickering shadows, it is clear that there is something peculiarly exuberant in his expression. Indeed, he creeps past the door of his wife’s room with such a look of barely suppressed glee that, if said party were to wake and catch sight of him, she would most likely assume him to be drunk.
