jess says: This is in between a 3.5-4.0 for me. I really enjoyed unravelling the secret behind the story and the three main characters' voices were so distinct. (Peeve though -- I hated that Mosey used the word "unpossible". Drove me nuts!) A little disappointed in the ending, though. I felt like everything built up (totally soap opera crazy style) and then the resolution was so... simple and non-dramatic. In my mind, I thought, that's it? That's how she faced off with the antagonist?? Boo. Other... than that, it was quite a fun read. TeachingTrisha says: After reading that Joshilyn Jackson has won awards for narrating her books, I decided to read the audio version of “A Grown-Up Kind of Pretty.” It was the best audio book I’ve ever read, bar none. She truly brings the characters to life. The story itself was so well-written – the descriptions, the dialog, the internal monologues – that I couldn’t wait to get back to it. Ms. Jackson is a talented writer with an ear for realistic language and a gift for witty metaphors and similes that taste like the south. The only thing I didn’t like was the title, which I felt didn’t do the novel justice. The story is about three Slocum women – 45 year old Jenny (called “Big” by her daughter and grand-daughter,) 30 year old Liza (called “Little” by her mother,) and 15 year old Mosey. Each one gets to tell the story from her point of view so you really get to know the main characters. And I like my characters well developed.Their lives begin to unravel with the accidental discovery of a tiny skeleton in their back yard, although we gradually learn that the unraveling has been going on for quite some time.
