The dreary, late-afternoon rain matched Catalina’s somber mood. The dampness left the house with a cold chill, so she’d had a fire built in the drawing room in hopes of keeping warm, but today she was thinking she would never be warm again. She sat in a comfortable chair near the fire, listening to the rain patter against the windowpane.
