The caller was Detective Bailey, sounding polite and sympathetic—and oddly excited, for Detective Bailey.
"I was curious to know whether you had a chance to look for your father's address book," he asked after an opening pleasantry.
"Oh, I'm sorry ... no." She made some excuse abou...t her mother being indisposed.
"Look, Mrs. Regan ... I have another reason for calling. We may have been given a break in the case. God knows, it's the first one we've had." No need to ask which case he meant. Fully awake now, Maddie said, "Tell me."
