“Before midnight, a new storm had blown up, a blustery violence that brought down tree limbs and flattened tents. By dawn, when the attack was scheduled to begin, the rains had ceased, the sun rising to a clean, misty sky. Even in the worst of the downpour, Johnston had continued to move, and if there had been any sleep at all, it had come in the saddle.
