Ne...xt to him, a receptionist filed her nails. The phone rang, and she straightened the wireless headset on her ears and punched a button. The perky tone of voice was incongruent with the bored expression on her face. I knew Briney Creek Police Department employed one sheriff, one chief deputy, and eight deputies. Apparently, the dispatcher was considered a deputy, but the receptionist was not.
